My father's family was from NYC, around 2-3 generations in Manhattan, his generation was in Queens. It doesn't help that my father was 40 and my mother 38 when I was born.Īlso, I grew up in IL. My maternal grandfather died when I was just 2 years old. My paternal grandfather died 11 years before I was born. To this day, I don't even know if my grandparents have a gravemarker, only that my aunt "was supposed to" handle that. Nobody ever visited his grandparents graves, or the graves of the many grand-aunts and grand-uncles of his, though he lived 2 blocks from the cemetery where they were buried. He made a few trips over the years to visit his family, but he never did so eagerly. He must have had some pretty rough upbringing in NYC. I don't know them, and I don't care to know them." My father OTOH responded to my mother's genealogy interest once by stating "I probably have dozens of cousins in New York. My mother was always into genealogy, so there's a lot more records on her side, and family info is largely freely available. I've got info about my grandmother's 8 siblings such as "Archie had around 6 kids" and nothing more.
It's really rough when you're trying to uncover info on the living generation, who are your close relatives. It's a small gesture but seriously, respect peoples' time & effort in helping you out. It's perfectly OK to ask for any info if you're looking for fresh leads, but you can help people to focus their efforts & look at the correct sources if you are more specific. Be clear & specific about what info you want help finding.Don't make people waste their time by duplicating work.
